Creatine Side Effects
Creatine, an amino acid used for building proteins, is produced inside the body our pancreas, liver and the kidneys. Here, it is converted to a phosphate and stored inside our muscles waiting to be used when we need a boost in energy due to activity.
Creatine supplements are used for in primary ways. The first is for use by bodybuilders who use it for increased muscle growth and the second is in the medical field where it has been show to help sufferers of certain heart conditions and with musclular dystophy. Basically, where additional muscle growth is required, creatine can be used.
Extensive studies have been performed to see if there are creatine side effects. Here are the results.
There are very few side effects that have been reported with correct use of upto about six months. The excepts are possible weight gain (good for bodybuilders as this weight is muscle mass), muscle cramping, diarrhea and headaches or dizziness.
There have been some reports, where people using creatine for extended periods of time, where more sever side effects have surfaced. These include increased blood pressure, reduced liver function, and some kidney damage. So, if you suffer from any of these symptomes you should not really be taking creatine supplements
Also, if you are taking NSAID's, drinking a lot of caffine, using diaretics, taking certain medication for peptic ulcers or gout you should not be taking creatine. As always, you must consult with your doctor before taking any form of supplement.
